Find the Leak

The challenge with many smaller roof leaks is determining exactly where water is seeping in. The drip, or the indicators of a drip (e.g., water stains, mold, rotting wood), may be evident in one location but is actually dribbling from another part of the roof. Without obvious external signs, such as missing or damaged shingles, this can be a challenge. Likely, you need to inspect your attic for the source of the leak and any path water might be taking before it finally drips. If necessary, pull back insulation to get a better look. Another strategy is use a garden hose to spray water on the affected areas of the roof, including any vents and flashing. With some patience, you should be able to pinpoint the leak.

Cover the Leak with Tarp

Once you find the source of the leak, with the help of plastic tarp you can make a very quick temporary roof leak repair.Stretch the tarp out over the area that leaking, cover the hole from slightly below the leak. To do this, secure the tarp by tying it down or using a strong duct tape, making sure the tarp extends over the ridge of the roof or drive nails into the edges to hold it tightly. Roof Shingles

If the leak in your roof is due to cracked, damaged or removed shingles, one of the best ways to block water flow until repair help arrives is to make temporary shingles.A Sheet metal is the best choice the job. Just trim the metal down to the size and shape of a shingle and slide the back edge underneath the row of shingles above, making sure the bottom edge lines up with the bottom edges of the shingles on either side. Nail it into place and coat the nail heads with roofing cement. This won’t be the prettiest looking patch in the world, but it can keep out the rain and help you roof make it until you can have it professionally repaired. The important thing is that, even if your DIY replacement doesn’t completely seal the hole, it will at least reduce water flow into your home.

Straighten Out Curled Shingles

If you discover that your shingles are curling and this is the source of the leak, you can straighten and flatten them back out to repair the leak. Keep in mind that shingles may be curling because they’ve reached the end of their lifespan, and if this is the case this roof leak repair is temporary at best, and you will need to call a professional in to assess the situation.

Gently flatten out the curling shingles and apply a little roofing cement to the undersides of the edges. Then just press them back down into place. This should help keep the water out while you await the handyman.

Use Roofing Tape

Roofing tape, available at any home improvement retailer and many hardware stores, is applied to the inside of the roof decking to prevent, or at least limit, water flow into your home. Not only is this one of the quickest ways to temporarily stop a roofing leak, but so long as you have a ladder or something to stand on, roofing tape can be applied from inside your attic or the top floor of your home. This makes it far easier than other temporary fixes such as tarp or garbage bags, which usually have to be secured from the top.
